Trump has such an iron grasp on his constituents that he can convince them to buy into whatever idea as long as it’s sold as *his* idea and not democrats.

Throughout all his scandals and even ones that his base is upset with (Epstein list), his approval ratings outside of swing and democratic voters remain pretty much the same.

If only that energy was put to good use, America wouldn’t be so divided and on track to great things. Unfortunately, his whole existence just seems to all be about vanity, covering for his insecurities, and enrichment of him and his circle. It’s a shame.

I really wish the media would stop implying that tariffs are being applied to a country (in this case India) when they are a tax on American consumers/businesses who purchase and import another country's products. Tariffs are how Trump has raised taxes on Americans more than any other president since the 1930's.

That would definitely do wonders for affordable healthcare! The amount of finished drugs , drug substances, and excipients that come to the United States from India for use in USA manufacturing is enormous. This would wreck the supply chain of many manufacturing sites in the USA. However, Russia is a cancer on the face of the earth and they attack civilians 24/7 in Ukraine . Starving the Russian war machine of money is a good thing but I don’t think this is the right way to do it.

Protectionism is what empowered the European and American countries in the first place during the industrialization. Protectionism is what China has been doing for the past 40 years. It is impossible to invest in China or build in China, unless the majority of a company is owned by Chinese. They impose very strict requirements when you can build in China, or how you can trade, there are only a few economic zones where trade is a bit more lax.

For decades the West has **complained and criticized about the very hardcore protectionist policies of China ... Yet these sanctions IMPOSE similar hardcore protectionism on the Russian economy**. It absolutely is schizo-like what is happening here.  
So yeah, hardly surprising that the Russian economy performs well, while Western economies are throttled.

Sanctions are an Anglo-saxon invention, and they work only in limited circumstances. For example they work when you actually control the country on which you impose sanctions... The Anglo sanctions worked quite well on Colonial India for example. Hardly surprising when you actually dominate the entire country.. However sanctioning other countries is simply imposing protectionism on them.  
The West has lost their leverage on Russia, when they forcefully decoupled Russia from the Western markets and Western financial systems.....

This was also a dumb argument. If you sanction the oligarchs and seize their assets, they actually don't have anything to lose anymore and they massively lose their power. It also didn't happen with the Allied bombing campaigns on Germany. It also didn't work dropping more bombs than where dropped during all of WW2 on Vietnam, they also just didn't surrender.

Not a schizo take, just missing the point as most did even on this sub. The sanctions were never actually intended to cripple Russia, any more than the US involvement in Ukraine was genuinely to “protect democracy.” That is just the line they sell the shitlibs. Sanctions only work on small targets with no alternatives for trade and no ability to sustain themselves in isolation, and even then only barely. Russia is neither of these, and with the help of China and the expanding BRICS+ coalition they predictably came out stronger than ever. 

US fiscal policymakers are ghouls, but they’re not morons. When you see that the state department’s actions did not have the promised effect, your first conclusion should not be that the plan backfired; it should be that there were ulterior motives beneath the stated agenda. In this case the sanctions were used, not to cripple Russia, but to silo Europe. The US got all signatories to agree to “joint sanctions” on Russian exports, but it was the EU countries who depended heavily on Russian resources, particularly oil and gas. No coincidence that the Nord Stream pipelines also fell to pieces around this time. Without access to Russian energy, Europe (Germany especially) has resorted to buying much more expensive American LNG exports. 

Washington poked around in Ukraine (election meddling, far right agitators, diplomatic overtures) until Putin took the bait, then drew out the conflict as long as possible to stir Europe into Russophobic hysterics, and finally capitalized on that fear to create a captive market for American energy and arms manufacture. In this way the US reinforces its economic hegemony in the West, while it continues expanding NATO into the former Soviet sphere as a means of military hegemony. Note that it is never other NATO countries building bases, arming missile batteries, or stationing their troops on US soil, and hardly even on each other’s. Just a steadily increasing American military presence across Europe. Less a partnership and more a protection racket.

The neolib game used to be globalization, but China kicked America’s ass there. Hence the retreat to a multipolar world order and recent efforts to drive wedges between the various blocs on trade. The US aims to isolate NATO et al from BRICS+ and the global south and cement its dominance within this more limited sphere, since it simply cannot compete with China’s output directly. Less clear is how exactly demand alone is meant to resuscitate the American manufacturing base without massive investment of time and resources… But the geopolitics of it all seems to be working frightfully well for such a boneheaded approach. 

To wit: isolate Russia/China bloc and pick off allies one by one. That’s it. But since China in particular has thrived outside Western economic dominion by playing all sides, this really does threaten their model. And already we see some fruits: Syria collapsed, and now Iran on the ropes facing what sure sounds like regime change, with essentially crickets from its largest allies. Where is the sort of material support that China gave Pakistan during its clash with India these past few months? The lack of overt solidarity really is concerning because it suggests China still hasn’t realized that the game has changed, and doing nothing will not be a winning strategy forever. If Iran falls, BRICS and friends will feel its loss.

The sanctions were an attempt to turn Russian oligarchs and their minted elites against Putin, but it seems that we weren’t paying attention to the fact that Putin had thoroughly gut them politically in its entirety long before he ordered the annexation of Crimea. 

The whacking of Pringles and his co oligarchs followed that same pattern after they pulled that Soviet tank freedom convoy stunt nearly two years ago. 

They were making moves in strengthening their economy for a while by investing in it before they invaded ukraine and the sanctions regime just put their reforms and measures into hyperdrive because who would of thunk that Russia was an industrial nation with capitalists and state owned enterprises capable of filling in the vacuum with their own products. What helped them more was that the world had passively moved on from the 90s and 2000s. Most economies in the world are tightly knit with one another now more than ever. 

Even after Russia was kicked out of swift, they quickly worked out an alternative for their locals and with other nations.  We never diplomatically recovered from that and it hastened other states interests in diversifying the baskets they put their eggs in to better protect themselves.

There was no way in hell that some of Russia’s trading partners outside of the EU was going to comply with US sanctions in hindsight and its ehy they kept talking about Russia being ‘isolated’. It was for domestic consumption. Complete fantasy.

Putin is unironically the most progressive head of state in the liberal socdem sense than any sitting EU/UK and western head of state and its funny as hell. Putin is the premier social democrat.

The realistic objective of the sanctions regime is to reduce Russian export revenue, not to embargo a country which is essential to the global energy market. That these policy makers have forgotten this, and in their delusions of grandeur and 90s era hegemonic thinking imagine that they can isolate the Russians from the global energy market altogether, is simply lunacy. The endless cat and mouse game of sanctions enforcement is not a problem to be solved by hunting down "shadow fleet tankers", but rather the manifestation of this basic reality, that Russian energy will continue to flow to developing nations no matter what anybody does. 

India is buying discounted Russian oil not because of some authoritarian affinity or third-worldist inclination, or in defiance of its promised adherence to the Euro-American sanctions regime, but rather because it knows that *someone* is going to buy the discounted oil because that is a structural reality of the energy market. They are happy to refine that oil, or just slap a new label on Russian crude or natural gas, and sell it to the Europeans and others who will happily pay the markup so everyone can keep playing this bizarre game of pretending to embargo the largest energy producer in the world during a time of inflation when that's against every single country's interest. 

India especially is in desperate need of this not just for its middleman export benefit, but also for its own market, as a developing economy with large inflation problems of its own, it is in no position to turn down cheaper energy. If we do actually press this ultimatum in the form of Graham's "nuclear option" of sanctions packages, it is highly unlikely that India and similar importers of Russian energy will behave any differently. Of all the likely outcomes of such sanctions, like new forms of evasion, highly winnable litigation against us through countless organizations which we ourselves set up, and pushing India and others even closer into BRICS, the least likely outcome is the crumbling of the Russian economy as rabidly obsessed over by proponents of this policy.
